Why ... why ... why ... do we plan big parties, and then spend the entire day before the party totally stressed.
Is this fun?
Tomorrow I will have a "Late Summer Deck Party" for new and old work friends ...
Today I am CLEANING CLEANING CLEANING ....
When exactly am I planning on making the food? Don't really know, thankfully everyone is brining something.
The conflict is that tomorrow AM I have a church breakfast for the sunday school kick-off... and I still have to go buy the food for that, and be at the church at 8 am to start cooking.
Poor planning, I know but it is what it is.

Now that I actually start blogging again, my comments are not working.
So if you tried to stop us from this puppy thing ... even my blog was apparently voting in favor of the puppy!

The other day someone I know and love was ranting about the woes of Mondays. Yeah, I hear her, and we all know what Mondays are about. We as a society have been lamenting about Mondays forever ~ well at least from Mama Cass to "Manic Monday". But you know what I can't take??
Friday mornings ...
Especially after working four ten-to-twelve hour days.
Especially now that the corporate "motivators" have deemed it necessary for our departments to be manned on Saturdays (and my "department" consists of me, myself and I). So Friday NIGHT is not even special anymore.
But this morning here at home we are all tired and cranky. We are out of clothes (or "outfits) as Willa calls them) that we want to wear, we are out of enthusiasm for the day ahead, we are probably out of orange juice or something else essential for breakfast. When I come down and plug Harry into my Bose i-pod deck (When Harry Met Sally soundtrack) I get halfway through "Where or When" only to have my i=pod ripped from it's moorings to be replaced by Willa's and Relient K singing something about chapped lips, cell phones and theme parks - quite loudly I might add.
Well, at least there is coffee and plenty of 1/2 and 1/2.
If my corporate boss calls today and chirps his usual "Life is Good" phrase at me I just might jump out my 5th floor window.
Yeah, I'm back, and back crabby to boot.
P.S. - Did you know Relient K also did a cover of Manic Monday?
I like their cover of Sloop John B, I'll have to ask Willa to play me the Manic Monday ~ perhaps we'll wait until Monday AM

I want to post about the hummingbirds this morning ,,, and about the Green heron in the pond ... and .... and ....
But I have to get up at 4:30 to get on the road for that ^%$# corporate meeting 3 1/2 hours from here ... so the posting will have to wait.
...sigh...

Why does parenting have to be so hard ...
why does it often feel like my family is "dysfunctional" only to turn around and a half-hour later we are all the best of friends?
Why do I scream at my daughter (because she is screaming at me) when all the while I know that this is NOT the way to solve the problem, but it's the ONLY way I can get through to her at the moment.
Why does it feel so good some times to get in the car and just drive in any direction that leads AWAY from home .... only to find that 1/2 hour later I am actually looking forward to being home ...
again ... rhetorical questions ... no answers required, but some morale support would be welcome.
By the way, what did we do 20 years ago when there was no such term as "dysfunctional family"

* I confess I was hoping for something that resembled winter before the end of March - but THIS?!?!? ZERO is way too cold for me. Yet who am I to complain when Birding Dad has to work outside all day (although he confesses that between jobs they will get "lost" in a few delis or coffee shops for longer periods than normal).
* I was praying that we could get a propane delivery before we ran out, and turn up the thermostat again (we've been keeping it quite cool, as the next delivery truck was scheduled for Wednesday and we were quite low). Well, my prayers were answered and we got a delivery yesterday GREAT! You say?? not so - the total for this tank is $2818.86!!! Whaa??
* I was so anxious for the end of January at work, to finish the "year-end" reporting whether or not I met my goal - just get this stress over with. And here it is February (sigh) with a whole new set of goals and new deadlines and Ekkkkk! an entire new set of grads, graduating from a new program that I still don't know enough about - who will be needing jobs and I'm just not sure HOW I'm going to find them!
* Now let's hope for the best in THIS ... today I start physical therapy for my shoulder ("adhesive capsulitis" if you need the technical diagnosis, "frozen shoulder" if you don't), I am looking forward to it, because I need some relief from the pain, and definitely need the increased range of motion ... but everyone tells me that what they are going to do will hurt like hell .... so again, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!
... I'll let you know
Posted by sunybank at 01:37 PM
Why is it that every time you THINK you are going to be able to meet all the deadlines and pay all the bills on time and even have enough left over to replace those black pumps with the hole in the sole ...
*the car repair costs $456.00
*you schedule an MRI for your aching shoulder and your deductible is $500.00
*the dog needs to go to the vet for some minor surgery on his mouth to the tune of $ (price yet to be determined)
P.S. rhetorical question, I don't really expect an answer but a sympathetic comment or two might help a little

When speaking with a co-worker today, and mentioning my RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) she started laughing hysterically ...
"What? You have THAT? Like the commercials??? People really have that??"
.jpeg)
I'm glad she could laugh, recalling all those nights she and her husband watched the Requip commercials and thought no one could possible have those crazy symptoms. Me? Not laughing folks, as I sit here at the computer because I can not sit still in front of the TV anymore, getting up to pace around the room because it's a better alternative than cutting off my legs.
... and no, I don't take the medication. Why you ask? Something about the "may cause you to fall asleep or feel very sleepy during normal activities such as driving;" sort of scares me off.
So I'll keep the "Jumpin' Legs" as I have called them all my life (before doctors and Glaxo Smith Klein came up with a "syndrome" name, and try to stay awake while driving.
Please tell me I am not alone -
Don't you know someone with "jumpin' legs"??

OK, as referring to last weeks post:
* I am feeling better. The doc was right, and it must have been a mild virus that hung on for a couple of weeks, but now it's gone.
* $$ problems are a little better, as "the checks" came in.
* My #@$% car is DONE. The final repair was to cost about $400.00, but now the estimate has inexplicably gone up to $1,200.00. So it looks like we are forced to go out car shopping tonight, and perhaps rent a car for vacation next week .... and this is not the time to buy a car as we are not financially prepared to do so (is anyone ever?), and we'll have to "settle". For me ... right now I'd just like something reliable!!!
* It's still hot ... work is still unbelieveably demanding ... but I have vacation in 7 days .... so there is a light at the end of the tunnel ... let's hope it's not a train.
Posted by sunybank at 12:23 PM
the summer I mean...
* my car is dead, died four times in the last three weeks, always far from home ...
* I'm driving birding dad's car, which has no A/C, spoiled I am ...
* There would not be enough time in a 12 day week to accomplish all that seems to be required of me at my job in a single week ....
* I have some weird stomach ailment which has me feeling sick all the time, especially when I eat ...
* money is somehow extremely scarce the past few weeks causing a real dilemma given the car issue and given a 13-year-old who believes that summer is for doing expensive stuff and spending lots of $$$$
THAT SAID .....
* had a great trip to the NJ aquarium last week with all the grandkids (thanks to #1 step-daughter's season pass),
* spent a delightful day at a good friends house and pool on Sunday afternoon, very impromptu, burgers and dogs and sun and water and pool volleyball
* the house has A/C, and work is as cold as a meat locker, so I can beat the intense heat
* got a doctor's apt for tomorrow AM, so perhaps I will be able to eat soon after all!
God takes care of us after all.

Our Pastor has resigned.
Some people got their way, I just hope they know what they've gotten us into (or out of).
Anyway, he is gone as of yesterday, and as chair of the SPPRC, my committee and I have the task of working through the process to help the conference select a new pastor for us. This week we will need to come up with our priorities and the criteria we are looking for.
Do you know any unemployed PERFECT IN EVERY WAY pastors?
Posted by sunybank at 01:02 PM | TrackBack

I'll write about the most recent developments in our "small-town church saga" later ... for today ... the chair of the committee on Pastor-Parish-Relations (yours truely) has her hands more than full ...
for now, I read a quote today ....
"100,000 lemmings can't be wrong."

When you have to go to work.
uggg....
Well, just today I think, and if I can get enough done today I can take the rest of the week off, just like Birding Dad and Birding Girl.
We're going on a camping trip did I tell you?
Where?
In our backyard!!!
Posted by sunybank at 01:09 PM | TrackBack
Did I mention the planned trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore MD for next week? Birding Girl (our resident dolphin-lover and striving-to be marine biologist) loves aquariums, and Balitmore's Inner Harbor area has so much to offer ... so we plan a 3-4-day vacation.
And what happens?
Nani has a baby! That's right, true story... it seems that Nani, one of the dolphins at the aquarium has given birth. Wouldn't it be great to go now and see this baby dolphin?
Well... yes ... except ...
The dolphin exhibits, and the dolphin shows are all cancelled until further notice while Nani bonds with her baby.
I thought dolphins were such intelligent creatures ... llike us!
I bonded with my child in the first 12 hours of her life!
C'mon Nani, get it over with!
Now it looks as though we will try to postpone the trip until some time later in August ... if I can get the time off from work. August is when the "big move" is scheduled to take place and the boss is frowning on late August vacations. Grrrr....

Did you ever just get angry and want to blow up at someone or some group of friends people ... but you can't because you are in a postion that puts you in charge of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee fostering good relations between the different cliques groups... and then they dump on you when you're stressed out from an awful day at work down and came to this choir rehearsal gathering to have fun and sing be uplifted? ... and then when you have almost blasted everyone let your guard down ... they hit you where it really hurts ...
... your kid.
"Should I bring her over for the late practice tonight?"
"umm ... no, she can just be in the congregation Saturday night. We're going to just have a core group of the original band ... and then add others as they want to join and sing"
Excuse me????
Did I hear you right? She WAS the core group! There were YOUTH and a leader ... they played guitars and sang and performed for the church and were excited about the music and the opportunity to contribute to worship ...
... and then you guys with your bass and your amplifiers and your overpowering adult voices took over and squeezed them out!
No, I will not tell her what was said ... I will not even tell her father as he will get angry and say something to someone as I should ... but no ... I'll just keep the peace, do my usual quiet simmer and find some way to make it all work out in the end.
In the meantime ... while I'm still feeling angry and hurt ... I'm glad I have a blog ...
... and maybe we'll show up and "sit in the congregation" with our daughter Saturday night ... and maybe we won't. (hows that for passive agressive!)

...but I can't stay long!
I want my LIFE back! My TIME, my SANITY, my BLOG TIME, my RELAXATION TIME (oh, wait ... I never DID have that.
Maybe when this mess at work dies down, and maybe when the summer starts and the hubub at chuch is over, and maybe, just maybe then ... I'll have time to catch up on the undone stuff at home.
After THAT! I'll have my life back ... or not.
How about you? Are you ready for the summer and an easier schedule?

OK. Birding girl's friend comes for a sleepover Friday evening. What is she still doing here at 5 PM on Sunday?
Want to know ? I can tell you...
she can't go home because when I drove her there, no one was home!
So, she's back, and hanging out until her mom (who is out with a friend) and her dad (who is somewhere else) get back on the scene.
Honestly, I don't believe these people even wonder what she's up to!

I received this as an e-mail from my sister this morning:
"What you see below are not see-thru skirts. They are actually prints on the skirts to make it look as if the panties are visible and these are the current rage in Japan. They'll be the rage here in the USA soon. (Get them @ Wal-Mart and Sam's Club)"

My only comment here is "Not on MY daughter" (who of course upon seeing these photos said "eww, Mom - gross!" - I wonder what she will say if they actually do catch on :~0)

WHAT? Dissapointed is not the word for it!
OK, so if you read my anticipatory post the other day about the book I was about to read I have only this to say ... WHAT????
And what about Francesca???
Oh no, Mr Waller ... you can not do this to me ... You can not end the book this way ... good story ... but again THE WRONG ENDING!
So now I will go back to finishing Middlesex (was taking a break because the Audio Cassette was chewed up, and I couldn't continue until I got the book and read (you know like pages with actual words and you read with your eyes)the chapter I was unable to listen to.
and for now - I will be taking a looong break from Robert James Waller - and, if I run into him, I will probably not be speaking to him. (I'm sure he cares).
So there.

OK, here I go ... not often do I go off on a rant but REALLY!!

Following is a faithful re-type of an actual letter written to the editor of our local town paper. The letter came after the town voters overwhelmingly approved the library budget.
(I'll change the names to protect the idiot ignorant)
To the editor:
Let's talk about (SmallTown) Library taxes. For those of you who did not vote, the vote took place at the library (not school) by checking YES or NO on a copied form and stuffing it into a box.
Very antiquated, just like the voters who queued up in the lobby. They obviously have not heard about impeding digitalization of ALL libraries around the world.
One will read any book in any library on the Internet. Yes, it will take time, years, maybe more. But it will be so.
And don't give me that "I have no Internet" while holding a $60 subscription cellular phone in your hand.
The truth is that libraries are on decline. People read less, have less time to sit in circles and socialize at the library.
So go ahead, build this new library, waste our money, distribute DVD's and CD's for free to thousands of people (how is that legal? If I watch a library DVD, I don't buy my own and MGM cries in front of U.S. Supreme Court).
The libraries will fade away. The end.
Signed:
Idiot Worm without a Book - in my Small Town USA
WHAT??? Are you serious?
Do you actually look forward to raising generations of children who will not know the pleasure of sitting in their favorite place, with a book in their hands, turning pages with anticipation, moving their bookmarks from page to page, flipping forward (and back) to sneak a glimpse of what will happen next?
No library? No walking quietly between isles of books that smell like books, and feel like books, reading titles that stir your imagination? No quiet place (away from home) to go research a topic for a paper? No Tuesday morning read-aloud library group for pre-schoolers? No gathering of literary and not-so-literary neighbors who want to discuss a book or an author? And speaking of authors ... where will we meet them? In the bookstores where they go to sign their books? OH NO ... I forgot there will be no need for BOOKSTORES!!! silly me! No latte and a chair and a book to skim through at the local "Barne$ and N0b1e". Geez ... 'cause what a waste of time that was!
Oh, and let's just give up on people in third-world countries, and impoverished rural America ... who can still get books from some caring outreach mission who brings a mobile library to the area once a month! Why should THEY learn to read ... certainly they have no use for works of classic literature! OH ... I forgot, they could just download the e-book to their PDA!!
I personally own a PDA - and have the capability to download e-books ... do I? NO! Why would I want to read my books off a tiny screen on a hand-held pack-of-cards sized gadget, when I can get the same thing, at the same price (or less) in book form (large print even if I should so need to)?
If I am going to "read" on-line, it will be the news, or someone's personal blog ... NOT A BOOK! Books are what I use to take a break from my computer!
Now, that said, you all know I am a great consumer of Audio-books, as I have two hours a day to ride in the car ... this is a wonderful way for me to keep up on many great books, and use my time wisely. Audio books, however are far more expensive than mass-market paperbacks ... so how do I solve this problem???
I GET THEM FROM THE LIBRARY!!!!!
alright ... I know this guy has a right to his opinion ... and perhaps his opinion has something to do with the fact that he CAN'T READ! I am also not opposed to the digitalization of literary and research works because there is a need, and a place for that use. But for me, I am proud to live in a town where the residents (antiquated as they may be) turn out in force to APPROVE the library budget, and keep this antiquated wonderful institution around for future generations!

Did I mention that I finally got to the salon to get my roots touched up a hair cut?
Yep ... this is me:

How did this happen?
Me: "I'll be 50 in 8 months, and I don't want to look 50"
Lori: "So something stylish and new?"
Me: "Whatever you think, I trust you" (she's been cutting my hair for 26 years)
cut ... snip ... spray ... blow dry ... paste ... lift ... pull ... yank! ...
Lori: "This is how they're wearing it now" ... fluff ... lift ... paste ...
Me: "I didn't say FIFTEEN!"
Lori: "No, it's great!" ... pull ... scrunch ...
Me: "I will never be able to style it"
Lori: "This is easy!" (they all say that)
So I walk into work yesterday and everyone tells me how great my hair looks .... "that takes 10 years off you" ... "chic!" ... "you look like Melanie Griffith ... no, Meg Ryan ..." (choke)
The problem is that TODAY, when I had to style it myself ...

This is the look. **sigh**
So this morning I try again ... blow dryer ... brush ... paste ...

Still dealing with more cr@p with the bank. It started with e-B@y and then it was internet withdrawals using my debit card number. NOW it seems that someone has gotten into our OTHER account ~ this time with an electronic draft for $800.00!
This morning my husband and I are off to the bank to close out all our accounts and start all over. I'm sure you know how very TIME CONSUMING this all is ... I would like to strangle someone!
and the "someone" can't be very smart ... I mean, if you were going to tap into someones bank accounts ... wouldn't you check first to see that that person actually had substantial funds in their account? Every time they hit me it overdraws! SMART theives, go for the large bucks ... or so I've been told.

So I finally decide that since I'm my age (which is 3 x 9 + 2 + 7 + 13) it's time to purchase some products that will help my skin stay "young-looking". You know the cleanser, day cream, eye cream, night cream etc.
I purchase from this company, some products that are made for women over 40 (in case you didn't do the math), only to find that the writing on the containers is WAY TOO SMALL to read even WITH my reading glasses!
I can't tell the DAY CREAM from the NIGHT CREAM!
Could someone please get real!? If the product is MADE for "older women" get a grip and make them in LARGE PRINT!

It's not just the e-bay account.
There are many charges on my BANK account (debit card) that are not mine. Spent a good deal of time yesterday at the bank ... we will continue to try to fix things Monday morning ....
In addition to other things, they've used my account to sign up for various internet services ~ a Hispanic E-greeting card membership ~ and here's the kicker ....
...used it to make a $5.00 donation to the Red Cr0ss!!! ... theives with a generous streak???

Ever have one of those??

Yeah ... me too.
Only lately, it's almost a daily occurance.
Mostly now they are centered at the back of my skull, leaving me thinking that they are more muscular in nature and not sinus like my headaches usually are. I checked with the doctor yesterday just to be sure they weren't a side-effect of the medication, which does not seem likely. They could be stress of course, but then why do they come and go (the stress certainly does not).
I thought last night that I was just sitting wrong at the computer through a little hours of surfing blogs ... but now today it started while at work ...
Of course you know my husband thinks all headaches are an "excuse" ... well, he won't admit that, and he does have compassion, but at times when it's headache~after~headache I can recognize the look on his face (the rolling of the eyes without actually rolling the eyes).
So, I will apologize to him beforehand ~ but honey, I have a headache again.

What she said!
Posted by sunybank at 07:30 AM
Oh, this gets better and better!
Remember last night, and the movie we couldn't go to because we ran out of fuel oil? Well, that's not all that went wrong last night ...
STRIKE TWO: When we got "stuck" at home, Birding Dad went out to pick up extra snacks ... and got some HOT wings from the local pizza place ... HOT was not the word! WAY, WAY too hot to even touch your lips! We like hot wings .... but these ... we cound not eat! Luckily, we had a few other snacks ... SEE?
STRIKE THREE: Then we prepared to "rent" the movie LadyKillers on IO. Well, it seems that with the holiday stress and all, well, you know how it is ... I may have been a little behind on some of the bills. It seems the check (due on Dec. 24th - how dare they!) had not made it to them yet ... and while they did not shut off our cable (it wasn't THAT late), they blocked our "renting" priveledges! So now I have to call in, and pay with a credit card and we will now have a one-month CREDIT when they do receive the check!
STRIKE FOUR: OK, so we're bad parents. We "rented" Lady Killers. We all like Tom Hanks, and it was listed as a comedy ... 10 minutes into the movie we had to shut it off due to the language!!!! F#@* this and F#@* that and Mother*#@*%! who and what - No duh, we did not check the rating first. So now what?
We redeemed this by renting Mrs. Doubtfire, which Birding Girl had never seen ... and she loved it! (she kept waking us up from our dozing states to see the funny parts)
STRIKE FIVE: Today we resumed the plan to see National Treasure ... which is playing at the mall at 6:45 pm. NO I DID NOT buy tickects on line! You saw what happened yesterday when I did that! So we show up at the theatre at 6:00 ... move our way up the line until we are ALMOST at the window ... when the sign flashed "NATIONAL TREASURE - 6:45 - SOLD OUT"
WHAT??? YOU have got to be kidding?!?!?!?!?!?!
In the words of Chevy Chase Clark Griswald
"Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Pass the Tylenol!" (or something like that)
The only thing that could save this disappointment was my wonderful husband ... and although at first none of us were speaking to each other ... he took us to the Ponderosa Steak House ... where Birding Girls tears dried and he somehow got us started on the uncontrolable giggles over nothing and ended up laughing so hard we were snorting and shooting soda (and I think chocolate pudding) out our noses until we cried again!
I hope your New Year is as full of ups and downs, and that you can laugh at them all.
(Maybe we'll try to catch the movie during the week ~ ya think?)

soooo.... Is it really all my fault when I oversleep by, say ... AN HOUR AND A HALF!?!?!?

Now everyone is stressed, birding girl is crying ... birding dad is yelling ... birding dog is misbehaving ... AAAGGGHHHHH!!!

I just came back from food shopping again ... (I hate food shopping) ... it seems that tomorrow there is a big (and getting bigger by the minute) birthday bash here - for me. (the actual date isn't until Tuesday)
Both step-daughters and their families, Mom and Dad, sister, brother-in-law and kids, Best Friend, and us. This one is going to be "chafing-dish-style" as I don't think we'll all get around the table.
So, in anticipation of the birthday $$ my mom will give me tomorrow (like clockwork - same ammount every year - you can bet the farm on it), I went out and bought new cord slacks. Why would I shop right before my birthday you ask??? BECAUSE I AM GETTING SO FAT THAT NOTHING FITS ME ANYMORE AND I AM POURED INTO THESE JEANS LIKE A SAUSAGE!
... and oh, by the way ...
... this is the last birthday I'll be celebrating ... ever ... I have decided that I am old enough.

Why do I "sign up" to do the family Thanksgiving when I don't even have time to shop for the required foods?

This morning, rushing flying through the supermarket before work, I had to work my way around all the "soccer moms" in sweat clothes and pony tails who were leisurely shopping after their morning jog ... and clogging the isles to "chat" about the particular type of bottled water that is best ....
Struggling to turn my overloaded / overheavy basket (with the stuck wheel) around the little old man who is reading turkey gravy labels ... my high heels sliding on the floor where someone carelessly dropped the Thanksgiving Goya olives (all over her best running shoes no doubt) ... it occured to me
that there may not even be time for this rock-hard bird to THAW between now and 48 hours from now when it has to go in the oven!
I won't even bring up the $$$.$$ I spent - and exactly how does THAT happen

when the actual turkey is FREE!?!

Once again we have reached the middle of the month and I am $***.** short in the account. So the question is - pay the mortgage and pray that the other checks don't hit? Or bite the bullet and tell Birding Dad that I have screwed up again and need to borrow $$ from the "building account".
**dials the phone**
Whew! He didn't answer - now I can bury my head on this for another 1/2 hour.

I might actually have a few minutes to blog - if it wasn't for all the time I'm spending deleting SPAM!!!!
Exactly why did I (female, last time I checked) need 352 spams regarding pen1$ en1argement??????
... and all this damage was done on election day!!!
the guy would have made better use of his time if he VOTED 352 times for Kerry!
No.... maybe we didn't want him to vote anyway ....
just GO AWAY.
I think I've deleted about 220, at the rate of 20 at a time, I should be done by the weekend!

Tomorrow is the biggest day of the season year, here is "Apple Country NY".
We are expecting 30,000 people in town ... food, vendors, apples, crafts, food, live music, apple pies, exhibits, food, rides for kids, apple butter, pumpkins, pets ... get the picture? Not to mention the four farm/orchards in town will be hosting a huge apple-picking crowd...
But ... Whoa!!! Back up to the "rides" part .... tonight was the prelude to tomorrow ~ for town residents only ~ to hit the carnival section of tomorrows festivites, and "ride all night for $10" ... so of course, birding girl invited a friend and we went ... now, not to be unkind or anything but:
WHERE DO THEY GET THESE CARNIVAL WORKERS??
A few people speculated tonight that perhaps they recruit outside the prison on release day. I am sure that a prison record is a prerequisite for the job, and a college degree disqualifies you ... but is there not a happy medium?
These people actually come into close contact with our children! Shouldn't they have some child-care background (other than convicted pedophile)? Shouldn't they be required to bathe once a week? Wash their hands once a day? NOT, smoke in my child's face while strapping her into the incredibly dangerous piece of broken, outdated equipment you call a carnival ride? These rides had more lights out than working; one ride had room for three but only one seatbelt - so two kids get turned away; another needed the smoking, mumbling carnie worker to take a sledgehammer to it between each ride.
Now, we are a mildly upscale town. I'd like to know who hired this company with all their second-hand, semi-broken equipment and scarey people? We are about to entertain 30,000 out-of-town guests folks! How impressive is this?
Our yearly Fireman's Fair has a better class of people, safer, cleaner rides and more of them. Did anyone talk to the firemen for a contact?
Well, it's over now ... we're home, and those carnival people are all sleeping (with each other ?) in their trailers ... and let's hope that tomorrows guests will stay over on South Street with the craft vendors and extraordinary food vendors!
Us? We're leaving town for the day.

umm... excuse me ....

I seem to have lost the weekend.
Where did it go?
How did it get to be Monday morning?
Can I have a "do over" please?
Posted by sunybank at 08:47 AM
not fair...not fair...not fair...NOT FAIR!
I have a day off today. A day totally to myself (birding girl is at day camp). Have two big projects planned for today, one if which is clean out her room while she is not home to say "No don't throw that out I NEED it!"
So what happens?? I'm SICK! You know the stomach and... thing?
Hit me at about 11:00 mid-project! I have all this stuff pulled out of her closet into the middle of her bedroom floor and I am too sick to do anything with it!
Can I call into work and change this to a sick day? Ya think?

It's looks as if they (whoever "they" are) are about to open up the @#$%^ Carnival! I hate carnival time!! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!!!!!
Now, just in case you think I am anti-American tradions and kids and fun and summer ... allow me to explain:
I work at a school. A vocational school for adults (well, they're out of HS at least, if not actually adult). We have night school, that's my responsibility, nights. Every summer the Carnival sets up in our parking lot!!!. Now just try to teach with that going on outside the windows of your classroom. Try and find a parking place!! Just try to get students back from a 10-minute, between-class break when they have strolled over for sausage & peppers (and a quick turn on the Tilt-A-Whirl) instead of the usual pretzels from the snack machine in the lounge!
Then there are the carnival people (and I don't necessarily mean the clientele)!!! Who are these people who work for the carnivals and sleep in the trucks at night? Hello? Creepy! I work sometimes until after 11 ... do you know what it is like walking to your car and wondering who is lurking behind the ticket booth? We have had people peering into window ... Peeing against the building ... walking into the building to use the rest room (what's wrong with those port-a-johns over there?) or the candy machine (oh, go back and get cotton candy will ya?).
Time to lock the doors, post signs (NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS) and shout over the din of that monotonous music and flashing lights.
P.S. ~ later this week when I am in my office happily munching on zepoles you can remind me how much I hate the carnival ;~)

OK, just getting a little nervous here.
We are leaving for vacation at 8 am tomorrow morning.
Birding girl's friend is coming with us. Friend and her family have been away on their own family vacation this week. I thought they were due back on Thursday. We have been calling every day, but no friend.
I know I gave her mom the dates, it's Saturday afternoon and they are not home yet..... I do not have a cell phone # for them.
So .... What do we do if they are not home by tonight?
**Update, 3:52 and friend has called ... whew ... they are just now arriving home, and her mom is frantically doing the laundry and re-packing her for a morning departure.

Thanks for all the comments on the last post.
Just to let you know I did call Barnes and Noble the local book store.
I asked what the criteria is for placing books on the teen reading table. The manager told me that the decisions came from the corporate office in NYC.
Called corporate - customer service. They told me that the choice is made by determining authors that have sold well to teen audiences in the past. I explained that this was the first book written by this author. "Oh," he replied, "then that criteria wouldn't fit would it?" He then looked up the book and saw that the publisher has listed it as reading for "young adults". I explained my concerns to him, while making it clear that I did not read the book, I merely read the reviews on Barnes and Noble dot com and Amazon dot com and that I am not actually complaining just questioning. I also explained that is was not the religious aspect that has me concerned, but simply what I can expect and/or trust when recomended by this store for certain age groups. He said that some sexual content is not unusual on the teen reading list, but that rape is unusual. Ummm, yeah, mine too.
He said he certainly saw my concern, he read through the reviews, and would take it to the department manager and they would look into it.
That is all I could ask.
My daughter is not at all involved in this. I don't think she should be. I don't want her "afraid" to read a book because Mom may get freaky on it. But I do need to know if she comes to me and asks something like "Is rape is OK if God ordains it?" ~ that I am expecting the question and can answer it with some preparedness. As for this book, I think we'll wait, at least until Mom reads it. She has four more book that we picked up that day ... (by the way I have them all ordered at the library for myself as of this morning) ... and she has lost interest in this one for now.
P.S. Anything I should know about "The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants"?
Posted by sunybank at 08:32 AM
Went to a local "large-franchise-book-store-with-two-names" on Friday. My daughter loves to read, so we went to get "summer reading material" As she is almost 12, and reading at a high level for her age, we skipped the "kids" section and went to the "Teen Summer Reading" table. There was a book titled "The Garden", an apparent fictional re-telling of the love story of Adam and Eve. Before I let her buy it, I decided to check it out. Came home, went on-line to Amazon and read the review. Here are a few exerpts from the review:
Despite the Serpent's strenuous objections, God insists that Adam and Eve mate, and the event turns into a rape, for which Eve is loath to forgive either God or Adam. Only later, when the Serpent changes form, becomes a man, and makes love to Eve, is she prepared to accept her central role as the mother of humankind.
In an author's note, Aidinoff explains that she has drawn on lore that equates the Serpent to Wisdom, who is said to have been with God at the creation, and the smart, empathetic, even romantic Serpent will evoke the most response from teenagers (God is certainly one-dimensional by comparison).
There's no doubt this book will upset some people, both in its depiction of God and because of its sexual scenes, which, though not salacious, are intense and uncompromising. Perhaps most disturbing is the scene in which God urges Adam to take Eve against her will.
OK, whatever your religious beliefs, how does this qualify for "teen summer reading"???
I am not at all for banning books. I would not criticize anyone's right to author any book, on any topic. That is what books are for ... to open our minds ... to see other views ... to learn, to think and to form our own opinions. However, as a parent, I have now begun to wonder why books don't come with ratings as movies do.
So, I have come to the conclusion that now is the time to start pre-read or at least research the books she reads. I do not shelter her, but I have my limits! At almost 12 (which by the way is 11), she does not need to read about rape-period. This summer we may stick to the classics!

... does anyone even look at me?
I know my life is a little hectic, and my morings are crazy, (walk the dog, make the coffee, fix the breakfast, make the lunch, sign the permission slips, pony-tail the hair ...) But doesn't anyone notice that I forgot to put my makeup on???!!! ...and no, "Hon, you look fine to me" doesn't cut it! You just didn't look! Thank God I looked in the mirror on my last trip to the bathroom ... or I'd not be here at my desk, I'd be over at the discount cosmetics store spending my lunch money!

I have this fear that if I don't post for a day ~ people will go away, just not come back ever to visit and read.
Yesterday was the day from beyond H@$$ ~ I wont even scare you by going there.
I will try to be "around" more today. Perhaps I can be more myself and get back in touch with my life (gasp ~ I think this is my life).
I need to catch up with piles of stuff ~ at home, at work, and even my e-mail!
Oh NO! My sister informs me that it's been my turn at scrabble for three days!
Don't go away! Please?!

I have a another pet peeve.
I spend my work day making phone calls to Drs. offices.
I believe that the rule is:
If I call, and the person I ask to speak with (usually the office mgr.) is "not in" you ask if you can take a message for said absent person, or connect me to her voice mail or something useful!
NOT "She's not in, call back tomorrow".
I could be wrong, but I think that a receptionist is there to assist the callers, not "put them off and get rid of the call with as little work as possible". Hhhaarrruummmppphhhhh.......There! I've said it!
Then again, it could be worse. There's always this

I have a bone to pick ...
The box says "You're tired, you're hungry and the tub of whipped topping is calling your name ...
... then goes on to say:
Our chefs combine roasted meatballs, jumbo rigatoni, a flavorful marinara sauce, and a zucchini medly to create a relaxing dinner that is nutritious and full of flavor".
So why is the tub of whipped topping still calling my name??????
and so is the snack machine! specifically the Ring Dings in the snack machine

Stop me if this is a repeat post.
I know it's my own particular rant.
BUT>>>
Where do these girls get this ATTITUDE thing?
"I don't got no attitude problem"
"Hey, if someone disrespects me I have the right to disrespect them right back"
"This isn't an attitude ~ this is just the way I talk to people - you can like it or not, but it's just my way"
"I don't have to look at you when I talk to you
Where does this "chip on the shoulder" come from?
How do I knock it off? This is a career training course? Who wants to employ you?
~ 14 years I have worked here and it only seems to get worse ... or maybe I am getting older.
Was a time I thought I could actually help; make them understand; have them learn useful human relations skills, teach them by example
~ ~ but ~ ~ AAaggh!!! ~ *beats head against computer screen*
Not anymore. Now I'm settling in on "Just do it my way or there's the door"
Am I wrong?
Posted by sunybank at 09:24 PM
Oh I had to get a new computer ~~~ smart move! Why? because the old one is on it's proverbial last legs, and slower than mole~asses. Now the slow is an issue, because I am so very limited as to time.
It was in this light that we also paid extra $$$ to DELL for in-home installation and data transfer (because I don't have time to do it).
So last night the independent-contractor-installation-guy comes at 7PM to set up my computer.
Big waste of time, friends ~~~ the data transfer didn't work for most of the important stuff ~ and he didn't install my scanner (as it is too outdated to work on W~XP), and didn't install my Opt-online internet service and modem.
So this AM I have the morning off (presumably to play on my new DELL).
I have to call my ISP to set up the internet service ~ no problem, ooops, although I can get on line ~ I can't get my e-mail. Error: winsoc 10061 So I call back.
They say "call windows, it's an XP problem.
Want to see how bad it got??
* call to windows ~ no, I'm not paying $30.00 for phone support! so ...
* call DELL ~ 30 minutes later, they say, "not our problem, call your ISP back".
* call to ISP ~ 45 minutes later (they take control of my computer, check everything, uncheck everythings ~ PRESTO ~ STILL DOESN'T WORK! They tell me it may be the Norton Internet protection program "Call Symantec"
* Call Symantec ~ NO they want to charge me $30 for the call.
* call DELL ~ 30 minutes later ~ the foreigner, (who speaks only moderate Kings English, my apologies to all foreign-born readers), does a GOOGLE search (of all things) for the error message, has me go through the whole search process on-line with him and then says "call your ISP" and tell them to read this article.
* call the ISP ~ "Not our problem ~ Call DELL, don't you have support?" "in the meantime you can access your e-mail through web-mail"
* Call DELL ~ "You understand that this is above and beyond your service agreement"? "We are not really required to go in-depth into a problem of this nature".
ME: "I don't care at this point who's problem it is. I paid $$$ for someone to come here and set this #$%^ up because I don't have time for this! Someone can now come and package this stuff up and take it out of here! I am late for work!
* DELL ~ hold on 30 minutes later ~ sorry, you will have to call your ISP ~ it seems to be that the port listed is not accessible. They have you set on the wrong port.
* ISP ~ "the port is correct, call your DELL support"
* ME ~ silence
* ISP ~ "Mam?" ... Hello ... um
* N|ME ~ "I can not **&^%$ believe this! Exactly what am I supposed to do at this point?!?! Do you have any understanding of the level of my frustration??? Do you???"
* ISP ~ "Mamm... please understand ... mam?"
* ME - CLICK
* Me (call to husband) ~ here insert intermittent sobs ~ "I am done ~ I give up, I am late for work ~ I can't talk to these idiots any more ~ I am worn out ~ I give up ~ I am taking a shower and going to work 45 minutes late! I know this is not your fault, but I am yelling at you anyway, and you will just have to deal with that!!"
* husband ~ "I know ... OK... You're right, ... poor you ... OK, I'll call someone tonight, don't think about it, go to work, try to have a nice day"
Isn't he great? Somehow, I was thinking this was all his fault ~ he's the one who thougth the old computer was too slow. Wouldn't want to waste time would we.
Stay tuned, saga should continue tomorrow...

... and today is cold and windy!
Posted by sunybank at 10:09 AM
snow?
a two hour delay?
and today I have to be at work at 8 AM !
I'll admit, I was the skeptic who did not believe the weather forecast ~
shame on me
How does this happen?
REVISED: The two-hour delay turned into "closed for the day" (Is that like a three-hour-tour?)
Posted by sunybank at 05:51 AM
ever have one of those days?
~days when, as much as you love your computer, you would throw it in the nearest lake if you could?
~days when you want to: set up / download / upgrade (pick one) something, and of course something goes wrong and YOU SPEND THREE HOURS trying to fix and or undo the problem. Now you don't even remember what it was you wanted to do in the first place ~ let alone why it was so all-fired important.
this machine on my desk has successfully sabotaged my Saturday!
anyway, I have my problem 90% fixed, but my e-mail is still going to the wrong profile and my headache will not allow me to think on it any longer.
Posted by sunybank at 05:10 PM
OK ... I've had it!
when the contents of "someone's" closet spill out onto the floor ... and then grow little by little into the room like a slowly advancing glacier ...
until this morning ~ while trying to get into said closet to hang a shirt ~ step ~ crunch ~ reach ~ uggh ~ lean ~ FALL INTO THE CLOSET!!!!
That's it!
So I did what I said I wouldn't do ... after she went to school I attacked the closet.
Not bad. 45 minutes of sorting and stacking and THROWING OUT and it looks 85% better. (the doors actually close!) Now the rest is up to her and I'm late for work as usual.
She will thank me when she gets home and she will thank me even more tomorrow when her grandmother comes to babysit and does not find reason to lecture her on the condition of her room!

Don't you think they're making a little too much of this:
"Dr. Fatkins you say?"
I personally am not a proponent of the Atkins diet. I do not believe it is the most healthy weight loss plan. But simply because the man created this diet, did he have to follow it?... for his entire life? Could he perhaps be a secret carb junkie? Is that a crime? Really, I have known doctors who smoke - yet advise their patients against it, who are overweight, yet advise their patients against it.
If the plan works for some people ~ should they now drop it because he was (not very) obese? I know, it is the "Daily News" but the man is dead, find something else to write about.
and oh, by the way what happened to HIPAA regulations? you know, a patient's right to privacy?

I was married at 19, divorced at 23.
That was almost 25 years ago ... so ...
Why do I always have to remember that February 9th is my first husband's birthday. A fact I have no reason to remember, or even want to remember! (not to mention, that there are so many things that I forget that I should and want to remember!)
OK, so "Happy Birthday" ... wherever you are.
maybe that will end it
... 'nuff said, go away.

I go to the doctors office - one would assume I want to see the doctor.
No ... I see the Nurse Practicioner. OK, so this time it was no big problem. I like this woman, she's good, and I just needed a referral to a dermatologist to have some perhaps pre-cancerous growth lopped off my body.
But - Then, (while I am still standing next to "Mary" the Nurse Practicioner) I ask to make an appointment for my yearly physical (for which I am 2 years overdue) and they ask me "Did you want to have the Doctor or Mary do your physical?"
*squirm* and I almost whisper "May I please have that appointment with the MD?" while not looking at Mary.
This gets even better:
I call the dermatology office, to make an appointment for the "lopping-off" and am told "OK, that's Monday the 16th with "Ari" the PA (physician's assistant).
Whoah
Look! Nothing against these people - I am an allied health professional myself but right now I WANT A DOCTOR! They are cutting something off my body! Is my health plan not good enough?
....or am I all wrong here?
Posted by sunybank at 08:32 AM
Just a few minutes here ...
Doctor's apt this AM, bank, post office, 1 load of laundry, "someone" forgot her flute (concert today), had to make 3 phone calls for work, so... late for my volunteering in the classroom, stayed too long in the classroom. I now have 25 minutes to change, fold the laundry, eat (probably not) and get out the door to work.
Worse yet, I have that four-letter word that starts with S and ends with W to look forward to on my commute home tonight at midnight! Then of course tomorrow will be a delayed opening, making me late for work again.
This working for a living - gets in the way of your life.

Hey I guess there was an early dismissal today!!!! ... someone just walked in the door!
Whoa
I didn't know there was an early dismissal!!!
I did get a call to say that the afterschool program was cancelled due to the weather and that the kids would be coming home on the busses. But that's 3:40 PM, not 11:40 AM !!!!
Good thing I was still home.
Gotta check this out with the school, need just a little communication improvement here don'tcha think???
Posted by sunybank at 12:26 PM
Can we please have the actual forcast? This "not-knowing" stuff is just not acceptable! Sitting here at work - do we cancel night school - do we not?? In the meantime someones after-school-care program has been cancelled, I'm an hour away and I can't reach someones dad!!!
We can land a ROVER on MARS (albeit malfunctioning) and check the weather there ... but we can't tell the folks right here on earth what it will be doing 5 hours from now!?! Give me a break!
Posted by sunybank at 01:45 PM
It's Monday - back to work on one of those "not a holiday for everyone" days. Quiet day here (no students). "The Problem" from last week has been rehashed and put away for now.
Want all the details?:
She has opted to take some time and not pursue another experience just yet. Now I am feeling like a bit of a heel, and annoyed at life, people and the human condition. We are not all the same, we are not all fortunate enough to be in good health, and yet there are some people who because of their circumstances can not find their place in this life - AND THAT JUST PLAIN WRONG!
I may not have the experience or the education to pursue any job I want but no one has ever told me I can't be somewhere because of how I look, or smell, or my age, or the color of my skin, or my language limitations. So I am lucky - and so are you - and ... what more can I do for those who are not?
Posted by sunybank at 12:39 PM
Called that office back this AM
more clarification of the odor problem (trust me - you really don't want to know)
but from people here (excluding you, D) - I'm just not getting the support I had hoped for
getting a lot of "ooohh... sorry, what are you going to do now?"
and "gee... I don't know what to tell you..."
and a director who just laughs ....
So ... I'll bury myself in some other work this morning ... and call the student back later - but for now - "fiddle dee dee - tomorrow is another day"
Posted by sunybank at 11:52 AM
Please ... it's a weekend, weekends are supposed to be stress free!!!
It's just one of those days around here where everyone is "at" everyone else. Or maybe it's me being psycho-stress-mom again. At least that's what they tell me the problem is, it's just that I wouldn't be stressed if I didn't have all this stuff to stress about ... kinda like the chicken and the egg I guess.
Anyway, on the way driving my darling daughter to her sleepover party this afternoon she was singing the song from Nemo - "Just keep stressing, just keep stressing ... What do we do? we just keep stressing" She makes me laugh that kid, and this time - out loud, which, well was a good thing.
(I think this family needs serious counseling)

What do I get?
* Get the perfect shoe fit
* Know the rules for eye makeup
* Top 10 myths about marriage
Do they think all women are total gits!?!
How about a discussion on the risk factors of HRT?, or maybe stress management?, or perhaps career options?, a list of recommended novels?
For crying out loud! I don't have time to put on my eye make up, let alone read the "rules".
Now deleting this useless home page content. Someone send me a useful link for busy, intelligent women please!
