when is a "date" not a "date"?

when your new boss asks you to go to a baseball game ...
      nym_photo.jpg

      in an hour ...
because his brother is in the hospital (hence the extra ticket)...
and his girlfriend is tied up in meetings all day ...
and the die-hard (male) METS fan in your office (that he of course asked first) can't go because he has to take his girlfriends kids to a carnival ...
and someone mentioned that YOU were also a METS fan ...

It is not a date, for all of the above reasons ... but mostly because your decline the offer (graciously, of course) for several reasons. Such as:
      1) you have work to do this afternoon
      2) you are in a light skirt and heels and it's a cloudy, rainy, cool day.
      3) you are a METS fan ... but not exactly the biggest fan.
      4) you have only known this man about 5 weeks, and for crying out loud he's your BOSS and what would you talk about for the next 5 hours?
      5) you don't want to listen to you co-workers comments for the next six years!
      6) and he's going because he's ROOTING FOR THE OTHER TEAM!!!!

Well, c'mon ... what would YOU have done???
      p.s. Phew! Good thing I didn't go isn't it?

To be outspoken when truth is under attack, when charity is being bruised, or when important issues of life are at stake is a good and courageous thing. To be outspoken when nothing is at stake except the feelings of someone else is a small and contemptible thing. ~ Lawrence G. Lovasik (The Hidden Power of Kindness)
